As summer approaches and schools prepare to close, Ohio libraries are stepping up to ensure children’s reading skills remain sharp during the break. The Columbus Metropolitan Library (CML) is leading the charge with its annual Summer Reading Challenge, launching on Monday, June 1. This nine-week program aims to curb the “summer slide,” a phenomenon where students lose critical literacy skills during the summer months, often putting them at a disadvantage when school resumes.

What Is the Summer Reading Challenge?

The Summer Reading Challenge, a flagship initiative of the CML, invites readers of all ages to participate in a fun and rewarding reading program. Participants are encouraged to read for at least 15 minutes a day for 25 days. Those who complete the challenge earn prizes and raffle entries for additional rewards. For every five days of reading, participants unlock new incentives, making the experience both engaging and motivating.

How to Join

Signing up is simple. Readers can register at any of the CML’s 22 branch locations or online at columbuslibrary.org/summerreading. Participants will need a CML library card to join, but obtaining one is free and accessible to all. Once registered, readers can track their progress using the library’s website or the free Beanstack app, which simplifies logging reading time and earning rewards.

Kickoff Celebrations

The Summer Reading Challenge will officially begin with a series of kickoff events across the CML network. The main branch will host a lively party featuring family-friendly activities, music, and refreshments. Additional celebrations will take place at all 22 branch locations, ensuring that communities throughout Columbus can join in the fun. These events are designed to spark excitement and encourage widespread participation.

Why It Matters

The program’s primary goal is to combat the summer slide, a common issue where students lose up to two months of reading proficiency during the break. By keeping young minds engaged, the CML hopes to bridge the gap between school years and foster a lifelong love of reading. The initiative also emphasizes inclusivity, welcoming participants of all ages and backgrounds to join the challenge.

“The Summer Reading Challenge is more than just a program—it’s a community effort to ensure every child has the tools to succeed,” a CML spokesperson said. “We want to make reading fun and rewarding while helping families stay ahead of the curve.”

What’s at Stake?

Beyond the educational benefits, participants have plenty to gain. The program offers a variety of prizes, from books and gift cards to exclusive raffle entries for larger rewards. These incentives not only motivate young readers but also create a sense of accomplishment and excitement around reading.

The Summer Reading Challenge will run through Friday, July 31, giving participants ample time to meet their goals. Whether it’s a child discovering their first chapter book or a teen delving into a new genre, the program promises something for everyone.

How to Get Involved

Families interested in joining the challenge are encouraged to visit their nearest CML branch or explore the program’s website for more details. With easy registration, a user-friendly tracking system, and a host of prizes, the Summer Reading Challenge is shaping up to be one of the most exciting events of the summer.

As the school year winds down, Ohio libraries are proving that learning doesn’t have to stop when the classroom doors close. By fostering a love of reading and offering engaging incentives, the CML is helping young readers stay sharp, curious, and ready for the year ahead.
