Nigerian Lawmaker Warns Against Disinformation Threat Ahead of 2027 Elections
In a stark warning ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, House of Representatives member Ndudi Elumelu has raised concerns about the growing spread of disinformation, urging journalists and political actors to prioritize responsibility to safeguard the nation’s democracy.
Elumelu, a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), delivered his remarks on Tuesday in Abuja during the 2026 Press Week, themed “2027 Election: Defending Democracy in the Era of Disinformation.” The event brought together media professionals and stakeholders to discuss the challenges posed by fake news and misinformation in the political landscape.
The lawmaker highlighted a recent incident where an individual used a public platform to disseminate false information, misleading Nigerians. “What he said was false, and the truth was glaring to Nigerians,” Elumelu stated, emphasizing the importance of fact-checking and accountability in media reporting.
Elumelu also pointed out that the rapid circulation of fake narratives could distort public opinion and undermine democratic processes, particularly as political activities intensify in the lead-up to the 2027 elections. He called on media organizations to rigorously verify the credibility, background, and integrity of individuals before granting them access to public platforms.
“The media must ascertain the background, knowledge, and integrity of individuals before inviting them or granting them interviews,” he stressed. “We cannot afford to let falsehoods take root in our public discourse.”
Beyond the media, Elumelu urged political actors to refrain from using falsehoods and manipulation in their campaigns. “As we approach the 2027 election, I urge the political class not to seek power by all means but to uphold integrity in their campaigns,” he said.
The lawmaker emphasized the critical role of the media in safeguarding democracy through ethical journalism, responsible reporting, and fact-checking. He noted that credible information is essential for strengthening public trust and democratic institutions. “The media must remain a pillar of truth in these trying times,” he added.
Elumelu’s remarks come at a time when disinformation has become a global concern, with social media platforms often serving as conduits for false narratives. In Nigeria, where political tensions often run high, the spread of misinformation has the potential to exacerbate divisions and destabilize the electoral process.
The 2026 Press Week provided a platform for stakeholders to reflect on these challenges and explore strategies to combat misinformation. Attendees emphasized the need for enhanced collaboration between media organizations, civil society, and government agencies to promote transparency and accountability.
As Nigeria prepares for the 2027 elections, Elumelu’s call to action serves as a timely reminder of the collective responsibility to protect the integrity of the democratic process. With the stakes higher than ever, the media’s role in fostering informed public debate and countering disinformation will be crucial in shaping the nation’s political future.
