Nigeria: Bishop Calls for Prayers Amid School Kidnappings in Ogbomoso

ABUJA, Nigeria — In the wake of a violent kidnapping spree targeting schools in Ogbomoso, southwestern Nigeria, Bishop Emmanuel Adetoyese Badejo of Oyo State has issued a heartfelt plea to the faithful. Urging prayers for the safe release of hostages, the bishop called on congregations to include the victims in their Masses and intercessory prayers.
“Let us pray earnestly for the immediate and safe release of the teachers, students, and children abducted from schools in Ogbomoso,” Bishop Badejo said. He also encouraged worshippers to pray for Nigeria’s leaders, asking for divine guidance to help them act decisively in protecting the nation’s citizens.
The crisis began on May 15 when armed men on motorcycles stormed several schools in the Ahoro-Esinele area of the Oriire District, near Ogbomoso. Among the institutions targeted were the Baptist Nursery and Primary School in Yawota, the Community Grammar School in Esiele, and the LA Primary School in Ogbomoso. The attackers killed two individuals and abducted at least 45 students, a school principal, and seven teachers.
Disturbing videos emerged on social media two days later, showing the kidnapped principal and a teacher pleading with federal and state authorities to secure their freedom. Reports confirmed that a mathematics teacher had been killed while in captivity, adding to the growing anguish of the affected communities.
Oyo State’s governor revealed that six suspects allegedly involved in the kidnapping have been arrested, along with three others deemed “persons of interest.” The governor also noted that intensified military operations against Islamist factions in Nigeria’s northeast have forced these groups to relocate to other regions, including the southwest.
The spillover effect has extended to neighboring Benin, where Nigerian army units have been deployed to assist local forces in countering the escalating threat posed by Nigerian-origin Islamist militants.
In response to the attacks, teachers in Ogbomoso staged protests on May 19, demanding immediate government action to bolster school security. The demonstrations disrupted operations across several institutions, underscoring the community’s frustration and fear.
The kidnappings are part of a broader pattern of school abductions in Nigeria, which have surged in recent years. Analysts warn that such incidents not only endanger lives but also disrupt education, particularly in regions already grappling with instability.
Bishop Badejo’s call for prayer highlights the spiritual dimension of the crisis, uniting communities in hope and solidarity. However, many Nigerians are also urging concrete measures to address the underlying security challenges.
As the nation awaits further developments, the fate of the kidnapped victims remains uncertain. Their plight serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for effective leadership and coordinated action to safeguard Nigeria’s most vulnerable citizens.
