Ohio Launches Project Plan Ahead to Promote Safe Rideshare Use During High-Risk Holidays

As Memorial Day weekend kicks off, Ohio is rolling out a groundbreaking initiative aimed at reducing impaired driving and keeping roads safer. The Ohio Traffic Safety Office (OTSO) has unveiled Project Plan Ahead, a program offering rideshare credits to residents during high-risk holidays and events. This innovative effort seeks to curb alcohol-related accidents and fatalities by encouraging people to opt for rideshare services like Uber and Lyft instead of getting behind the wheel after drinking.

The program, which officially launches this holiday weekend, allows eligible participants to claim up to $15 in rideshare credits. Users are responsible for covering any additional costs beyond the subsidy. The initiative is timed to coincide with Memorial Day weekend, a period marked by increased travel and higher rates of impaired driving.

Emily Davidson, Director of OTSO, emphasized the importance of planning ahead. “Memorial Day weekend is a time when we see heightened risks on the road,” she said. “Project Plan Ahead provides Ohioans with a simple, safe, and effective way to get home. Every decision to plan ahead can prevent a tragedy.”

How It Works

To qualify for the credits, rides must begin or end in one of seven designated counties: Butler, Cuyahoga, Franklin, Hamilton, Lucas, Montgomery, or Summit. The credits are available between 5 p.m. and 3 a.m. from May 22 to May 26 and cannot be scheduled in advance. Residents can visit the program’s official website for more details on how to claim their credits.

Addressing a Persistent Problem

The launch of Project Plan Ahead comes on the heels of sobering statistics. During last year’s Memorial Day weekend, 14 people lost their lives in 13 crashes across Ohio, with nine of those incidents involving impaired drivers. Statewide, impaired driving remains a significant issue, accounting for 54% of all motor vehicle fatalities. In 2025 alone, Ohio recorded 10,161 impaired driving crashes, 541 of which were fatal.

“Impaired driving is a preventable crime that endangers everyone on the road,” the OTSO stated in its announcement. By offering financial incentives for safer transportation options, the program aims to reduce these numbers and promote responsible decision-making.

A Human-Centered Approach

The initiative also underscores a broader shift toward proactive measures in traffic safety. Rather than solely focusing on enforcement, Project Plan Ahead empowers individuals to make safer choices. For many Ohioans, the program represents a practical solution to a problem that has plagued communities for decades.

“It’s not just about avoiding a DUI—it’s about preventing accidents, injuries, and deaths,” said Davidson. “We want people to enjoy their celebrations but to do so responsibly.”

Looking Ahead

While Project Plan Ahead is launching this Memorial Day weekend, it is expected to be implemented during other high-risk holidays and events throughout the year. The program’s success could serve as a model for other states grappling with similar challenges.

As families and friends gather to celebrate, Ohio officials hope this initiative will inspire a wave of caution and responsibility. With rideshare credits in hand, residents have one less excuse to risk driving impaired.
