Akron Mayor Shammas Malik Outlines Vision for City’s Future in Third Annual State of the City Address
Akron, Ohio — Mayor Shammas Malik delivered his third annual State of the City address Tuesday night, emphasizing collaboration, progress, and a shared commitment to Akron’s future. Speaking to residents and community leaders, Malik outlined his administration’s achievements and ongoing efforts under four key pillars: safety, housing, education, and economic growth.
“Our city needs us all, and we all need each other,” Malik told the crowd, striking a tone of unity. “Akron has the talent, creativity, and diversity to succeed—if we work together.”
A Focus on Public Safety
Malik, who took office in January 2024 as Akron’s 63rd mayor, highlighted strides in public safety, including revisions to the police department’s use-of-force policy. The changes follow 58 recommendations from the Police Executive Research Forum, aimed at improving trust between law enforcement and the community.
“Safety isn’t just about policing—it’s about ensuring people feel secure in their homes and neighborhoods,” Malik said. The city is also expanding outreach programs to connect residents with resources before crises arise.
Tackling Housing Challenges
Affordable housing remains a priority, with Malik announcing plans to create more than 500 new housing units, many designated as affordable. The city has also committed three years of funding to assist residents facing eviction.
“Our neighborhoods have strong foundations, but too many vacant lots and homes in disrepair,” Malik noted. Federal grants totaling over $4 million, along with donated city-owned land, will support revitalization efforts.
Investing in Youth and Jobs
Under the “growing together” initiative, Malik pointed to expanded youth programs and educational investments. Meanwhile, economic development efforts have spurred job growth and business expansion.
“We’re not done yet,” Malik said. “Two and a half years into this role, I’m more confident than ever in Akron’s potential.”
